HIS mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever HE saith unto you, do it (John 2:5). The wedding host may have been nervous; his guests asked for wine, none was left. Mary, the mother of JESUS also invited, took the initiative. She approached the servants of the house, and sent them to JESUS with instructions, “Do whatever HE says.” The servants of the house may have been perplexed; nonetheless, they went. JESUS told them to fill waterpots with water, they obeyed; HE turned it into wine. Obedience does not question.
The act of obedience occurs in the heart. It is complete compliance with a request or submission to another person’s authority. Thus, our obedience to GOD is mandatory. How long do we obey GOD? 'Til HE says, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Obedience is faithful.
Christians don’t always immediately obey. We think about the work, question if we want to do it, question our abilities, question the benefits of obeying, and then wonder if it is GOD’S WILL! It seems the burden in our spirit, the sermons we hear, and confirmation in HIS written WORD ought to be enough for us to obey. Obedience is a function of faith.
Obedience does not mean we move into situations before being sent. Obedience does not mean we pick and choose when to obey. Obedience cannot work with, nor does it agree with defiance. Obedience does not own itself. Obedience does not maintain a personal agenda. Obedience does not have to understand the instructions. Obedience listens.
GOD blesses the obedient. “Obedience is better than [any] sacrifice” (1 Sam 15:22b). Whatever GOD says to do, obey; do not think. Your willful obedience will always please GOD.
